Your Golfing Achilles Heel: Poor Contact
The tops and chunks are related mishits that happen when the low point of your swing is in the wrong place.
The reason they are an Achilles Heel is because they can cost you a TON of strokes… (doesn’t it seem like they happen more often when you’re trying to hit it over a lake?)
Once you eliminate this mistake you will start getting predictable distance and your mishits will cost you far fewer strokes.
The good news is that it is easier to fix than you think, and Tom is going to show you exactly how with a simple drill in the video below!
Discover the Simple, 3-Step Process that Identifies, Diagnoses, and Eradicates Your Worst Golfing Mishits… Straightens the Most Stubborn Slices, Tames the Wildest Hooks, and Creates a Swing as Consistent as Clockwork
Read on to learn the deceptively simple part of your swing that makes all of the difference between bombing your drives down the middle of the fairway and slicing them into the woods… and how you can harness it to start hitting the ball with jaw-dropping power, laser accuracy, and machine-like consistency…
Dear Fellow Golfer,
If you’ve ever stood on the practice tee, cursing under your breath at a stubborn slice that just won’t go away…
If you juggle a dozen swing thoughts trying desperately to make solid contact and get some shred of consistency…
If you simply can’t straighten out a hook, or can’t make the same swing 2 times in a row… no matter what you try…
Then I’ve got something you need to hear about!
My name is Tom Stickney and I’m a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher and the Director of Instruction at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, CA.
I’ve been on the lesson tee for 20 years and I’ve just about seen it all. I’ve worked with beginners on up through professional golfers… and everything in between.
And while I want to make it clear that there are a lot of great coaches out there…
…the simple fact is that the vast majority of golfers barely improve their game, if at all.
And it certainly isn’t for lack of trying. I’ve seen students spend thousands of dollars on lessons, training aids, and gadgets that promised the moon… only to leave them disappointed, frustrated, and no better at hitting a golf ball… and in some cases even worse!
If you’re reading this right now I’m sure you know the frustration… not knowing whether your next swing will split the fairway or send your ball screaming into the woods.
It’s enough to drive you crazy!
But the reason it REALLY drives me nuts…
The reason it REALLY gets under my skin…
Is that it doesn’t need to be this way!
The problem is that golf instruction is cluttered with so many “rules” about how you have to swing the club…
- Keep your head down
- Keep your left arm straight
- Make a “one-piece” takeaway
- Turn your shoulders back 90 degrees
- Initiate the downswing from the ground up
- Don’t swing too hard
The list just goes on and on…
And it’s not that these ideas are wrong… it’s just that it doesn’t need to be so complicated.
Because the truth is much, MUCH simpler…
You see, it turns out that everything about your ball flight… it’s distance, direction, curvature, and trajectory… is entirely determined by how your club moves through one very specific position in your swing.
What position is that?
It’s your impact position.
Now, if you simply take a step back to think about it, you will see that not only does this make perfect sense… it actually HAS to be true.
All of the physical forces that act on your ball happen precisely in the split-second when your club is in contact with the ball.
And impact is the ONLY point in the swing where the club actually makes contact with the ball…
Think about it… the golf ball doesn’t care or even know what your left arm does, whether your head moved, or how long your backswing was… it only knows what the club head was doing at impact.
Now this might sound obvious… but it wasn’t until recent technological advancements that we could really see it in action.
First came high-speed camera and video that allowed us to zoom in and study the positions of golfers at various points in their swing… Golf teachers everywhere did so and discovered something very interesting.
Take a look at the top of the backswing of Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, and Bubba Watson…
I chose these 4 golfers because while they are among the best ball strikers of this generation, you’ll quickly notice how DIFFERENT they look at the top of their swings.
Different club planes…
Different alignments…
Different leg, arm, and hand positions.
And yet if we fast forward our 4 professional swings we will indeed see that despite their radically different positions in the back swing… they are all in the identical impact position!
And when we compare the swings of low handicappers and professionals with those of beginners and high handicappers, we find time and again that the only consistent difference is the impact position.
What does this tell us about the golf swing?
It tells us that there is no single “correct” backswing, or top position, or follow through…
And that the only thing that REALLY matters is your position at impact.
Simply put, if you get the impact position right, you WILL hit a great golf shot.
And if you mess up the impact position, you CAN’T hit a good golf shot.
Which begs the question…
What Exactly is the Perfect Impact Position?
Well, if high speed video gave us a picture of the perfect impact position…
Then the latest technology in golf – the doppler radar launch monitor – put it under the microscope.
If you aren’t familiar with launch monitors, they are sophisticated pieces of equipment that allow us to measure, with extreme precision, virtually every aspect of your impact position.
It’s a “virtual MRI” of the golf swing, measuring every conceivable aspect of impact.
Below is just a sample of the data my launch monitor tells me about each and every swing… things like the precise direction the club is moving, velocities, spin rates, and launch angles.
This information is a gold mine for golf coaches like me.
I like to say that if high speed video laid the foundation for perfect impact… then launch monitors drew up the blueprint.
Long story short, by studying the data of thousands of golfers we now know exactly how the different aspects of your impact condition interact to determine your ball flight. In fact just by seeing a few data points on an individual swing, I can tell you precisely what type of shot it will produce.
Now I don’t want you to be intimidated by any of this…
You certainly don’t need to go out and buy a launch monitor (they cost tens of thousands of dollars) or hire a coach who uses one to benefit from what it has taught us about impact.
You see, I have spent the better part of my career distilling the lessons we have learned from this technology into simpler ideas that any golfer can use.
And what I’ve found is that there are 4 aspects of impact that you can focus on to straighten out YOUR ball flight and dial up your consistency.
I call them…
The 4 Impact Factors
There are 4 aspects of how your club moves through impact that work together to determine your ball flight. I call them the 4 Impact Factors, and they are:
Impact Factor #1: Club Face Angle
The first Impact Factor is your Club Face Angle.
At impact, your club face can be in 1 of 3 conditions: open, closed, or square relative to the target.
Just how important is Impact Factor #1?
Well, with the help of the latest technology we know that around 85% of your ball’s initial direction is determined by the angle your club face is pointing in at impact… whether it is open, closed, or square to your target.
In other words it’s pretty darned important!
Just by understanding, diagnosing, and correcting your Club Face Angle you can dramatically improve your accuracy with all clubs in the bag… splitting more fairways and sticking it closer to even the tightest pin positions.
Which brings us to Impact Factor #2…
Impact Factor #2: Club Path
The 2nd Impact Factor is your club path, which is the direction your club is moving relative to the target.
Again there are 3 possibilities, as shown below:
Your Club Path works together with your Club Face Angle to determine your ball’s curvature.
Specifically, when your club face angle and club path point in different direction, your ball starts where your club face is pointing and curves AWAY from your club path.
Taking control of your Club Path will help you straighten out even the most severe slices and hooks, saving a heck of a lot of golf balls in the process!
Impact Factor #3: Angle of Attack
The 3rd Impact Factor is your Angle of Attack.
For most shots, the correct Angle of Attack is slightly descending, with the low point a few inches in front of the ball.
This provides for the most consistent impact, helps put backspin on the ball, and sets the loft correctly.
If your low point is directly under the ball or before it – your club will tend to catch the grass before the ball which robs you of power and can twist the club face, producing inconsistent contact and inaccurate shots.
Impact Factor #4: Centeredness of Impact
The 4th Impact Factor is where the ball contacts your club face relative to the sweet spot. Just like in baseball or tennis, hitting the sweet spot transfers the maximum amount of power to the ball. Missing the sweet spot is a major “power leak” and also produces mishits in all directions… pushes, pulls, slices, and hooks.
In fact the very worst mishits – shanks, tops, and chunks – come when you miss the sweet spot dramatically…
OK, so we now know that 100% of your ball flight is determined by how your club head moves through the impact position.
And we know that the impact position is a combination of the 4 Impact Factors…
…And so the question now becomes:
How can you use this information to get into the correct impact position every single time you strike the ball?
To straighten out that nasty slice and start hitting fairways with machine-link consistency…
To fine-tune your accuracy and take dead aim at the pin with surgical precision…
…And to make clean, crisp, solid contact every time you take the club back.
Whether you’re swinging a driver or a pitching wedge…
Whether you’ve been playing for years or are a rank beginner…
And no matter what your current swing looks like…
Well as I said, this is precisely the question I’ve been working on for most of my career.
And after years of studying the data…
After working with students from complete beginners all the way up through touring professionals…
And after becoming one of the most read golf writers on the web by talking about launch monitors and impact conditions…
I’ve broken it down into a simple, 3-step process that you can use to self-diagnose your mishits, identify the Impact Factors responsible, and then fix it!
My students have been using this process in their games with amazing results.
But I didn’t stop there.
You see my goal is to reach as many golfers as possible…
I love teaching the game and I love helping new students… but between my responsibilities here at Big Horn, my private lessons, and my personal life… there are only so many hours in the day!
Which is why I was SO excited to put together an online video training program.
Something that could reach golfers all around the world…
That fit into everyone’s budget…
And that could be used at the driving range, on the course, or even in your back yard.
To get the same kind of results that I’m getting with my students in private lessons.
Well after what seemed like an eternity of planning, filming, and editing… and then refilming, re-editting, and putting the finishing touches on it…
I’m ecstatic to announce it’s finally ready!
I call it Fix Your Faults, and that exactly what it’s going to do for you.
Here’s How it Works…
Fix Your Faults is an online coaching program.
Sign up today and you will get instant, lifetime access to our membership website where you can watch all of the training videos.
You can access the program from virtually any device… your computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone…
And you can watch and rewatch as many times as you like.
The program includes everything you need to know to apply the lessons of impact to your game… all packed into one hour of high def video filmed on location at Big Horn Golf Club in Palm Desert, CA.
Here’s exactly what’s included!
Fix Your Faults will take you from wherever you’re at now and fix your major flaws… Straighten out the worst slices and hooks and get you hitting the ball more solidly.
First you will get an essential understanding of the 4 Impact Factors and how they work together to determine your ball flight.
Then you will learn the simple, 3-step process I give my students so that they can diagnose their own mishits… and know how to fix them.
After that we will go through all of the common mishits one at a time…
Slices, hooks, fat shots, tops & thins, the skied driver, the shanks, general inconsistency, and loss of power. In plain English that anyone can understand, you will learn what causes each mishit and how to correct it. You’ll get practical drills that you can take to the range that day to help erase even the most severe swing flaws.
Not only will you be able to eradicate whatever mishit is currently plaguing your game, you will have a virtual toolkit of knowledge, turning you into your own best swing coach and empowering you to self-diagnose and self-correct any future mishits that sneak into your swing.
Here are just a few of the things covered in this program…
- A checklist to cure your slice, including drills to straighten out the old banana ball even if you’ve been fighting it for years…
- How the get your power back on those days when you just “don’t have it”
- Learn to fix your own swing anytime you start slicing, hooking, hitting it thin or hitting it fat…
- EXACTLY what causes each of the common mishits… never again ask yourself “What am I doing wrong?”
- The simple, 3-step process I give my students to self-diagnose their swing and know exactly what to train to improve their ball flight
- The most important driver of consistency… Hint: it has nothing to do with practice
- Why it’s absolutely critical you understand the difference between the “in-to-out” shank and the “out-to-in” shank… and the best drill to eliminate each from your game
- And much, much more!
But that’s not all: When you pick up a copy of Fix Your Faults today it comes with 2 very special bonuses… completely free of charge!

Can it transform your ball striking to the point where it practically forces you to shoot lower and lower scores?
Just look at what these ecstatic customers had to say…
Important Testimonial Disclaimer: The following testimonials are from emails we have received, comments left on our site, surveys and other conversations with actual customers. However these results should not be viewed as “typical.” Your results will depend on numerous factors including the quality and amount of your practice, your current ability level, as well as other factors.
Just wish to add that I joined your website a month ago and I’ve been practicing after watching your videos many times. I’ve never had such great results so quickly – improved ball flight and distance. I’ve had lessons in the past with many teachers, mostly with negative results. Thanks so much for simplifying what others make so complicated.

The lessons are clear, easy to follow, and informative. I had developed a frustrating shank so I took your advice. I made some small adjustments to my ball position and alignment, and presto! No more shanks!

Tom, I’m in my late 60s now and have been forced to cut back on my golf due to back pain and stiffness. Well what I found is with the swing you teach, I am able to generate more power while still feeling like I’m swinging easier. It’s been much easier on my back and has allowed me to play an extra 18 each week without paying the price the next day.
Thanks for helping me get back to my passion!
Nicholas M, Atlanta
After watching your videos I am able to hit the fairways more often. It has give me a new confidence on the tee.
Your system works!
Richard Lee, Los Angeles, CA
I really love the practice bonus. After watching I spent a couple hours on the green down at my club, trying the methods you talked about. Well I have to say it started paying dividends almost immediately.
I’m starting to really understand how to play different lies and shots around the green. It’s like I’m developing an instinct for how to get up and down.

Coach Tom delivered a wonderful presentation that ANY level of golfer can find improvement.

I have been a weekend golfer for 8 years. I mostly shoot in the mid 90s with an occasional round in the high 80s. For the last couple years I felt like I had hit a plateau… no matter what I did I just couldn’t get my scores down any lower. And I tried everything. I got a membership at my local range, I tried a bunch of training aids, and I took some private lessons.
Well after a few weeks of practice I have officially blasted through my plateau! Last week I had my best round ever (by 6 strokes!) and broke 80 for the first time.
Tom, thanks for the lessons! Can’t wait to see how low I can go!
Andy B, Orlando, FL
